Da Vinci: “The First STEAMER"

In our school, we have been trying to learn from the figure and work of Da Vinci, he turns to be in words of the kids the first STEAMER in History.

Here you have an example of the activities that can be done in class. The activities can be developed in STEAM sessions; they involve many skills beyond the mere attainment of a final product.

STEP ONE: MEETING DA VINCI: Da Vinci´s community manager; English, Social Science, and STEAM. Carolina Gala, David Cabrera and Mónica Castellanos.

INVESTIGATION
Using the Flipped Classroom methodology that allows the students to work at home with a previous idea in order to work in class with other activities.
•    We share through Google classroom links where children can find the information that later they will work, in the case about life and work of Da Vinci for example:
•    The videos will be edit with questions and the use of “Edpuzzle”, therefore kids work the content at home, watching the video and answering the questions.
This was the video we used:
https://edpuzzle.com/media/5c990faf54843940b5995696

We will share video using Google classroom
•    If you want to have a deeper understanding you can try with a mind map; first, the information will be work through a Thinking Routine such as “Generate, Sort, Connect and Elaborate”.

COMMUNITY MANAGER FOR A STEAMER
Then in class, we will challenge the kids, a video arrives at the classroom: “Da Vinci was a genius not well understood by the people of his time and we need to help him to get his ideas known”: Let´s be his Community Manager:
They have to know what a community manager is: in our School Alejandro Lassala our Community Manager came to visit us and explained what his work is about; he explained that he is in charge of keeping the web and social networks of the School.
The children will try to:
•    Make a web page with Google Sites.
•    Make Da Vinci´s Facebook Front Page

  • Make Da Vinci´s video: The first Steamer:

STEP TWO: CBL: LES VOLEURS D'ART. French, German, English Natural Science and STEAM. Alejandra Arazola, Ana Rojas, Carolina Gala, David Cabrera y Mónica Castellanos.

The CBL methodology and the Louvre Museum.
Our students had a mission: Stealing some paintings from the Louvre Museum. How? Using Da Vinci's machines to get in.

Randomly students in cooperative groups were given a folder with instructions and videos to build their own models. Creativity and imagination along with their ideas were the keys to open the museum doors in this adventure.

Different teachers in different classes participated, for example, the German and French teachers prepared a plan. The children chose the masterpieces they were going to steal and sell in an auction. In Natural Science and English classroom they revised simple and complex machines and structures in order to build the machines which they will use in the robbery.

STEP THREE: FAKING DA VINCI. Natural science, STEAM. David Cabrera y Mónica Castellanos

The sixth graders were working with the motor system so we used the Vitruvian Man to make our last activity on da Vinci's project. The target was to forge this famous masterpiece using our own images. At the same time, mathematical concepts such as proportions and geometric knowledge were used to get perfect Vitruvian men and women of the XXI Century.

PASO TRES: FALSEANDO A DA VINCI. Ciencias naturales, STEAM.
